Very fine 19th century Chinese stick stand decorated with dragons
Our ref. 278 An outstanding 19th century Chinese stick stand bearing exceptional decoration in the manner of so-called Straits porcelain, and painted with two dragons amongst foliage between yellow and pink bands and roundels in relief. The dragon decoration is exceptional. The base bears the original printed paper retailer’s label for ‘Charles Sleight, Specialities in Oriental Manufactures, 4 The Arcade, Old Bond Street W, silks, shawls, porcealains, etc.’
Note: Chas Sleight is listed in the London business directory for 1880 as occupying’ 4-7 The Arcade’ as ‘Oriental Dealer’. The Royal Arcade was built in 1879 and is rather smaller than the nearby Burlington Aracade and originally was simply titled ‘The Arcade’. However, after active patronage by Her Majesty Queen Victoria, the arcade was renamed ‘Royal Arcade’.
Original label ca. 1880 affixed to base
